Chance
“This is the money shot, bro.”
Brock, one of my best friends, groans from where he’s leaning against the wall mirror in the shoe store. “You can’t say that shit to other guys.”
“Not outside of porn,” Arik, the other best friend shopping with us, chuckles.
I hit him with a grin, grateful he left me an opportunity to get a shot in.
It’s a rarity.
“Watch a lot of gay porn, or is this something new your girlfriend has gotten you into? Is watching men who still have their balls between their legs rather than in their girl’s purse your favorite now?”
Brock smirks at my retort.
No. No. You should be terrified by him and his size even when he’s smiling. Um…kinda smiling? I don’t know. Doing whatever that shit is he’s doing with his mouth right now. Believe it or not this is what he looks like when his energy level is at peace. Thankfully, that happens a little more frequently than it used to.
“Fuck you both. My nuts hang exactly where they’re supposed to.”
“One from each of her ears?” I quickly quip.
This time Brock snickers.
Like I said before, it’s rare I get to be the one with the good comebacks. Most of the time, it’s me at the butt of every joke…though with an ass like this it’s hard not to be. Go ahead. Take a look. Nice, right?
“What are you laughing at?” Arik bites at Brock as he folds his arms across his chest. “Your fiancée is forcing you to do this shit, too. At least I’m getting paid to be there.”
“French isn’t forcing me to do shit.”
We both hit him with sarcastic expressions.
Of course she is! That woman does not ask for anything. She makes commands, and then people do it. Just. Like. Him. They’re both terrifying fucking individuals who seem to forget there are people in the world who respond better to praise than threats. Present speaking company included in that population. However, she’s my boss, and telling her anything that makes her eyebrows twitch is just a suicide attempt. And I love my life, so that’s damn sure out of the question. Man…just talking about suicide does bad shit for my center. Gonna need to crank the old jams and get my energy levels back. Maybe a little “1999” by Prince? That always reminds me to enjoy the good times. Hey! Are you singing it, now?
Brock growls, stands straight up, and glares. “I’m going because it’s my fucking job.”
“No. It’s Blade’s job,” I casually correct.
His body shifts closer causing mine to tense. “I’m head of security, asshole.”
Instinctively, I surrender my hands and step backwards.
Um…he is. Technically. But that’s more for The Castle, the exclusive and elusive strip club where we work. Well, where I work. The two of them retired, and I bet your pretty little face can guess why. That’s right. Love. Can you believe that shit? They exchanged collecting cash for dropping their underwear for an outdated notion. How fucking dumb are they?! What? Do I believe in love? That’s really a complicated question, isn’t it? Do I believe in the concept of love? Like can two people commit to each other for life? Sure. Do I believe your love for a person should stop you from having fun or doing what it is you love to do? No. Do I believe my own life will eventually take the course theirs did? Absolutely not. But in my defense, my parents are the more free love type, so the idea is a little farfetched to me. I mean, come on. One person. All. The. Time? Every day? For the rest of your life?! Even my fucking parents don’t live like that! Do you have any clue just how precisely our energy levels would have to sync up to make that a possibility? Remember the scene in Disney’s Hercules where The Fates are talking about the planets to Hades? Yeah. Pretty much that is the only way I’d give all my energy and my dick to just one chick.
“So, why’d French put you up for this bachelor charity auction?” Arik aims his question at me. “What’d you do to piss her off? Forget to put on clothes when you went to talk to her?”
Giving the dress shoes another hard once over in the mirror, I cock a crooked grin. “Nothing. Queen just happens to find me the most charming.”
“Not a chance in hell,” Arik argues.
“He begged,” Brock grunts again.
“Bro!”
“She thought he was gonna cry.”
Arik erupts into laughter, but I shake my head. “He’s lying.” I hit Brock with a scowl. “You know lying is bad Karma.”
“So’s pissing me the fuck off, and you do that shit constantly.”
Not my fault. He gets beastl
y when someone breathes too loud in the elevator.
“I think these shoes are perfect,” I announce with pride in my voice.
“If you’re going to a NASA convention or auditioning to be young John Glenn in a YouTube sponsored biopic,” an unexpected female voice states.
I dart my eyes over to the caramel skinned female peeking around the shoe shelf nearest Arik.
Oh shit, she’s hot.
My mouth twitches to retort yet nothing manages to leave my vocal chords.
Why do I suddenly feel like something inside of me is screaming to something inside of her? And why can’t I make sounds? And why is my spirit animal losing its fucking mind, demanding I go over there and fall to my knees for her?
Arik and Brock’s chuckles barely register, but her smile immediately does.
Full, glossed lips. Straight and white teeth….No, it’s not weird to mention that. I grew up in a nudist county and visited many many colonies that opted to live in nature rather than the burbs. To me, a healthy, cleaned mouth is a crucial part of care for your temple. While I enjoy a well-polished outside, I’m not a fan of sticking my dick in a mouth that resembles the Dark Ages. There’s a reason I didn’t like sleeping with too many chicks raised out there. Bad teeth and too much hair in too many places are big turn offs. Last thing I wanna do is feel like I’m fucking Chewbacca.
I assume I’ve been quiet much longer than I realize by the way Arik is giving me a concerned expression.
Rather than acknowledge him, I declare to her, “I have other options.”
She slides a bit more into sight revealing a body I wasn’t prepared to digest. Her legs are long and toned, hidden underneath a pair of hot purple tights. Her hips are wide and home to a perfect handful of ass. Her tits are hard to make out since they’re being concealed in a baggy, gray t-shirt featuring a strange looking bunny and the words ‘K-Pop and Chill’.
What the hell does that even mean?
I stare a bit longer observing her beautiful biracial features that seem to be hinting at maybe an Asian heritage alongside her African American one.
Korean? Maybe Thai? Don’t shoot me for not knowing the exact difference from first glance!
The stranger pulls her long, thick, raven black hair to the side of her face. “Are they equally as terrible as this one?”
Arik laughs again while Brock merely nods.
I quickly move to where another pair of dress shoes is waiting to be tried on. With a swift flick of the wrist, I discard the lid, and lift up one to display.
Her head tilts. “They’re great.”
“Ha!”
“But do they make them for men, too?”
Arik breaks out into more laughter at the same time Brock does.
Their chuckles oddly enough amplify the inexplicable feeling in the pit of my stomach.
What is that? What has my energy levels twisted? Why is my spiritual animal still howling and whining?
Unsure of a witty response, I simply sigh, “What do you want from me? I don’t typically wear a lot of clothes.”
“You are on the smaller side. Do they not come in your size or something?”
Between a nude lifestyle and stripping, it’s safe to say my closet is probably smaller than most. And it lacks variety. I like shit that goes on and comes off easy. Ha. Pun intended.
The additional jab at me causes me to playfully bite, “I’m large in the ways that matter, beautiful.”
A blush unexpectedly hits her cheeks, and my chest instantly swells with pride.
For the good comeback…nothing else.
“He obviously needs help, but unfortunately, so do we,” Arik casually mentions. “We’re all going to this charity thing tonight and instead of taking up the offer to have a stylist do this shit for us, Chance,” Arik motions his head towards me, “who is a colossal idiot, thought it would be a better idea for us to do it ourselves.”
I try to smile. “Thought it would be a fun bonding experience, bro.”
“See. Fucking moron,” Brock states with a shrug.
She suppresses her snicker by pressing her lips firmly together.
Being made to look like an even bigger one in front of the most stunning creature I’ve ever seen….Wait. What? Do I need a time out? Is my chi in desperate need of realignment?
Pushing past the abnormal thoughts, I ask, “Do you happen to work here?”
“No, but I do know a thing or two about shoes.”
My head motions down to the wedged white sneakers she’s sporting. “Obsession?”
She tucks one foot sheepishly behind the other. “A little. And my mother is the regional manager for The Glass Slipper so it comes with the daughter territory.”
“Sounds like The Universe put you in my path for a reason.”
“Yeah, to stop you from buying shitty shoes,” Arik slyly comments.
“A reason’s, a reason, dude,” I mutter, eyes still pinned to hers.
They don’t believe in most of the shit I do, but it is what it is. I think being centered and close to your enlightened self is a huge deal, just like I think treating your body like a temple, you worship in and at, is important. Physical, spiritual, and mental tranquility is what my life revolves around. I’m a peaceful soul. Typically.
Her grin grows sweet as she asks, “Are all of you wearing the same colored suit?”
Arik motions to him and Brock. “We’re wearing black-”
“Dark blue,” I interrupt with a point inward. “Brings out my eyes.”
She tucks her bottom lip out of sight, and it makes me wanna rush over to pull the damn thing back out.
Shit. Do I need to get laid? It can’t possibly have been that long….Hm. I’ll just say this. Whoever wins the date me with me at the auction will have no push back from me if they want it to end with both of us coming. Apparently, I need it. You know, I’m usually better in tune with my needs and have no problem filling them if you catch my drift.
“Syd!”
The shouting voice causes her to glance over her shoulder and yell back, “Coming!” Her attention lands on me once more. “I gotta go, but here are the basics you need. Solid black shoes, with more of a pointed or round toe. Avoid square ones. No mesh. No weird designs or splashes of color. Low heel is fine, too high and you risk needing to call Mission Control because you have a problem.”
We collectively chuckle.
“Laces aren’t a must, but I think they’re sexier.”
“Syd!”
My mouth barely gets out a “thanks” before she’s rushing towards the voice summoning her. To the best of my ability, I let my eyes follow her around the shelves, torn between an unusual nagging to chase after her and another to regain my focus on the task at hand.
“I know that look, Chance.” Arik drops his hand onto my shoulder. “And you should know….” He waits to continue until I turn to see the vindictive grin on his face. “That chick just left with your balls in her back pocket.”
Brock lightly laughs under his breath as I shrug off our green eyed companion.
No. No fucking way, dude. She….She was just a hot girl I didn’t get the chance to ask out. That’s all. Nothing more. Nothing less. It happens. It wasn’t a giant missed opportunity to connect with my one shot at forever. That’s not what the lump in the back of my throat is about it. That’s just…bad vibes from too much dickish behavior. It’ll pass. I trust The Cosmos. It always knows what it’s doing.

Sydney
“Thanks for the ticket, Rae. I swear I was going to buy mine. Swear.”
Regan Memphis, one of my only friends, gives me a kind smile. “Let me guess. The old lady who lives across the hall needed money to get out of a gambling debt.”
“She hasn’t played any kind of cards in years.”
“I never said cards. She looks like she could throw a mean dice game or maybe like to bet on the ponies.”
“She doesn’t.”
Rae taps her chin. “Did yo
u have to loan her money because she locked her keys in her car again and needed a locksmith?”
“That happened one time!”
“Which is why I said again.”
“No. She-”
“Accidentally did a little too much late night clicking? Ordered a new boat or a fridge or maybe a sex swing?”
The sarcasm receives a glower.
Once the expression makes an appearance, she ceases her teasing. “She needed help buying groceries, didn’t she?”
“Her check got lost in the mail.”
She slowly shakes her head. “Sometimes you’re too sweet for your own good.”
Isn’t that what any decent human being would have done?! I mean, she’s seventy seven with no family. I couldn’t just let her starve. I’m not heartless, nor do I want that karma out there. That’s the absolute last thing I need. The Universe has finally stopped shitting on me every other day, and if assuring an adorable old woman won’t go hungry helps keep my life a bit more on the happy side, I’ll gladly continue to do it. Honestly? Even if it didn’t build me credit with the force that balances the scales of life, I still would. Birdie is sweet. Funny. And sadly enough probably one of my best friends. Does that make me pathetic?
I try to prevent my embarrassment from tinting my cheeks. “I’ll pay you back. Every. Penny.”
“It’s all good.”
“No, Rae! I really will! But it won’t be this week….See, it’s my grandparents’ wedding anniversary, and I got them this great gift, but unfortunately, it made me max out my credit card and-”
